    JACKSON, Tenn. (BP) -- A newly married C. Ben Mitchell and his wife Nancy were living in Marietta, Ga., and looking for a church home. The search had frustrated them.

    JACKSON, Tenn. (BP) -- Union University has recently found itself in the spotlight of the ongoing faceoff between religious liberty and sexual liberty.

    The school -- affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention and located in Jackson, Tenn. -- rescinded a graduate student's admission after learning he had violated Union's Community Values Statements he had signed by being in a same-sex relationship. Alex Duron, the applicant, shared the news in a Facebook post Tuesday (July 21), prompting a social media backlash against Union but also expressions of support from Baptist leaders. Read More

    JACKSON, Tenn. (BP) -- Paul Chitwood, president of the International Mission Board, was the recipient of Union University's M.E. Dodd Denominational Service Award this year.

    MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) -- Mark Campbell, head women's basketball coach at Union University, earned his 600th career victory Thursday (Jan. 10) with the Lady Bulldogs' win at Auburn University at Montgomery.

    Campbell became the fastest college basketball coach in history, across all divisions, to 600 wins. He did so in just 691 games, breaking the women's basketball record of 706 games by Nancy Fahey, currently of Illinois, but who earned more than 600 wins at NCAA Division III Washington-St. Louis to start her career. Campbell is also faster than the men's record holder, Kentucky's Adolph Rupp, who reached the mark in 704 games. Read More

    BOSTON (BP)-- Luis Ortiz stepped into the shadow of the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Boston 25 years ago to make his Major League debut with the Red Sox.

    His career as a player, shortened by injuries and a playing field that wasn't always level, never blossomed. In an era when steroids abounded, Ortiz refused to take shortcuts to success.

    Tuesday night (Oct. 23), Ortiz stepped onto the field in Fenway Park once more, this time as the assistant hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers -- his childhood dream of making it to the World Series finally realized.     JACKSON, Tenn. (BP) -- Christians must ask everyone to follow Jesus and willingly associate with those who don't, James Merritt, a former Southern Baptist Convention president, said during the third annual West Tennessee Evangelism Rally at Union University.

    "The business of the church, and the business of every follower of Jesus Christ, is to find missing people and invite them to follow Jesus," said Merritt, pastor of Crosspointe Church in Duluth, Ga. "If we are not in that business, we are out of business."

    Merritt was the keynote speaker at the rally that drew more than 800 people for a worship service, dinner and breakout sessions March 4 at Union's campus in Jackson, Tenn. The event included for the first time a women's track and a student track. Read More

    JACKSON, Tenn. (BP) -- James Merritt, lead pastor of Cross Pointe Church in Duluth, Ga., will be the keynote speaker for the third annual West Tennessee Evangelism Rally March 4 at Union University.

    Ernest Easley, professor of evangelism at Union and organizer of the event, said the rally aims to strengthen and equip churches in evangelism and outreach.

    "My hope is that, through this rally, people in our churches across West Tennessee will become more soul-conscious, better equipped than they were before to share the Gospel and will be encouraged and inspired to do it," Easley said. Read More
